How Reflection Improves Professional Development
Among different approaches used for personal and professional growth, reflection can be highlighted. In a professional environment, people are usually concerned only about fulfilling their tasks. At the same time, reflective practices enable professionals to get better understanding about their strengths, weaknesses, and areas of improvements.
When it comes to my placement at ING Skill Academy,
reflection was an important tool I used during my professional development.
Thanks to it, I managed to develop a better understanding about my own
qualities and skills and find out which things need to be improved.
First of all, reflection allows people to transform their
experience into learning. Thus, in case there were some difficulties caused by
stress or time pressure, reflection enabled me to figure out why I felt
stressed or uncomfortable and how it was possible to change my approach to
working.
Also, reflection contributes to a development of emotional
intelligence. When evaluating workplace situations and communication with other
colleagues, people have to learn how they react emotionally and how their
communication skills should be improved.
Finally, regular reflection positively influences the
process of decision making since it enables people to detect patterns and find
solutions. Those who use reflection are more likely to make better decisions in
the future.
There are many approaches to reflection, such as Gibbs'
Reflective Cycle that involves analyzing experience according to specific
steps.
